The National Board of Review (NBR) has honored Wicked, the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the Broadway classic, as its Best Film of 2024. This accolade cements the film’s status as both a critical and commercial powerhouse, bolstering its potential as a strong Oscars contender.
The recognition doesn’t stop there. Director Jon M. Chu was awarded Best Director, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received the Spotlight Award for their exceptional creative collaboration.
Celebrating the Magic of Wicked
NBR President Annie Schulhof praised the film, stating:
“Wicked represents the pure magic that movies can bring to audiences. Every detail is beautifully crafted and designed, the actors are all exceptional, and the music is second-to-none. Together, it adds up to a transporting experience like no other.”
The awards celebrate cinematic achievements across a variety of categories, selected by a diverse panel of film enthusiasts, industry professionals, academics, and students. Last year, the NBR honored Killers of the Flower Moon as its top film, showcasing a continued legacy of recognizing groundbreaking films.
Spotlight on Fashion, Music, and Design
In addition to the film’s storytelling and direction, costume designer Paul Tazewell’s imaginative creations—particularly Glinda’s ethereal gowns—have drawn acclaim for their innovative designs inspired by “bubbles floating into the sky.”
Ariana Grande, who portrays Glinda, has also been making waves with her Swarovski-embellished jewelry featured in the film, adding to its signature visual flair.
The 2024 NBR Awards Ceremony
The winners will be celebrated at an elegant gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City on January 7, 2025, hosted by NBC News’ Willie Geist.
